What Can't You Put in a Dumpster? Prohibited Items Guide

Some items can't go in a standard dumpster due to safety and environmental regulations. Here's the complete list of prohibited items.

Why Some Items Are Prohibited

Roll-off dumpsters are hauled to local landfills, and landfills have strict rules about what they accept. Items that are hazardous, toxic, or require special processing can't go in a standard dumpster — not because we won't take them, but because the landfill won't accept them.

Disposing of prohibited items improperly can result in fines and environmental damage. This guide covers the most common items we're asked about.

Hazardous Materials

These items are strictly prohibited in all dumpsters: paint and solvents (oil-based), motor oil and automotive fluids, gasoline and kerosene, pesticides and herbicides, chemicals and cleaning agents, asbestos, and medical waste.

These materials require specialized disposal through hazardous waste facilities. Franklin County offers hazardous waste drop-off events for residents — check the SWACO website for schedules.

Electronics and Appliances

Most electronics shouldn't go in a dumpster: TVs, computer monitors, laptops, and other e-waste contain materials that need to be recycled separately. Many Ohio counties have e-waste recycling programs.

Appliances are mixed: washers, dryers, stoves, and microwaves can usually go in a dumpster. But refrigerators, freezers, and AC units contain refrigerants and require special handling — let us know if you have these and we'll help you find the right disposal option.

Tires and Batteries

Tires can't go in dumpsters because they don't compress and can damage landfill equipment. Most tire shops and auto parts stores accept old tires for a small fee. Franklin County also holds tire recycling events.

Car batteries and lithium-ion batteries are prohibited due to fire risk. Auto parts stores accept car batteries for recycling, and many electronics stores accept lithium batteries.
