Estate Cleanout Dumpster Rental: A Complete Guide

Estate cleanouts are emotional and overwhelming. Here's a practical guide to choosing the right dumpster and managing the process efficiently.

The Challenge of Estate Cleanouts

An estate cleanout means clearing out an entire home — often decades of accumulated furniture, clothing, paperwork, appliances, and personal items. It's physically demanding and emotionally draining, especially when you're handling a family member's belongings.

Having the right dumpster on-site makes the process manageable. Instead of making endless trips to donation centers and the dump, you have a single container for everything that needs to go.

Choosing the Right Dumpster Size

Most full-house estate cleanouts need a 30-yard dumpster. A typical 3-bedroom home, fully furnished, generates 15-25 cubic yards of debris after donations and keepsakes are set aside. The 30-yard gives you enough volume for furniture, appliances, boxes, and miscellaneous items.

For partial cleanouts (one floor, a garage, or a smaller home), a 20-yard is often sufficient. If you're only clearing out a few rooms or a garage, a 10-yard may work. When in doubt, size up — it's cheaper than needing a second dumpster delivered.

Sorting: Donate, Sell, Keep, Dispose

Before the dumpster arrives, sort items into four categories: keep (family keepsakes, important documents), sell (valuable furniture, antiques), donate (usable furniture, clothing, household items), and dispose (broken items, worn furniture, trash).

Schedule donation pickups before the dumpster arrives — many Columbus charities (Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill) offer free furniture pickups. This reduces what goes in the dumpster and gives usable items a second life.

Timeline and Process

Allow 3-7 days for a full-house cleanout, depending on the size and how many people are helping. The 7-day rental period included with our dumpsters is usually enough. If you need more time, we offer affordable daily extensions.

Start with the easiest rooms first to build momentum. Save the kitchen and basement for last — they're typically the most time-consuming. Load heavy items (furniture, appliances) first and fill gaps with boxes and bags to maximize space.

What Can and Can't Go in the Dumpster

Most estate cleanout items can go in a dumpster: furniture, appliances (except refrigerators and AC units), clothing, books, boxes, mattresses, carpet, and general household debris.

Prohibited items include: paint, motor oil, chemicals, tires, batteries, and electronics. These require special disposal — check the Franklin County SWACO website for hazardous waste drop-off events. When in doubt, ask us before tossing it.
