Dumpster Weight Limits Explained: How to Avoid Overage Fees in Columbus

Weight limits are the #1 source of surprise fees. Here's how to understand them and avoid overage charges.

What's Included in Your Weight Allowance

Every dumpster rental includes a weight allowance — from 1 ton (6-yard) up to 3 tons (30-yard). This is the amount of debris you can put in the dumpster without additional charges.

If you exceed the included weight, additional tonnage is billed at $95 per ton.

The Heaviest Materials

Concrete weighs about 4,000 lbs per cubic yard. Dirt and sod weigh about 2,200 lbs per cubic yard. Roofing shingles weigh about 250 lbs per square (100 sq ft). These materials fill weight limits fast.

For pure concrete or dirt, always use a 6 or 10-yard dumpster — a 30-yard filled with concrete would far exceed safe weight limits.
