Construction Dumpster Rental: A Contractor's Complete Guide

From remodels to new builds, construction debris adds up fast. Here's how to choose, schedule, and manage dumpsters for any construction project.

Why Construction Projects Need the Right Dumpster Strategy

Construction debris is unpredictable — you estimate 5 cubic yards and end up with 12. A good dumpster strategy keeps your job site clean, safe, and on schedule without surprise costs or mid-project delays.

At Dumpster Exchange, we work with contractors across Greater Columbus on remodels, new builds, demolitions, and tenant build-outs. Here's what we've learned about keeping construction projects moving.

Choosing the Right Size for Your Project

10-Yard: Best for small bathroom remodels, single-room demos, concrete and dirt removal. The 10-yard is ideal for heavy materials because it keeps weight within limits. Holds about 3 pickup truck loads.

20-Yard: Best for kitchen remodels, full-home flooring, deck removal, and medium demolition. The most versatile size — fits most residential driveways and handles a wide range of construction debris. Holds about 6 pickup truck loads.

30-Yard: Best for whole-home renovations, new construction, commercial build-outs, and large demolition. Maximum volume for high-debris projects. Holds about 9 pickup truck loads.

Managing Weight on Construction Jobs

Construction debris is heavier than household junk. Drywall, concrete, tile, lumber, and roofing materials add up fast. Each dumpster includes a weight allowance (1 to 3 tons depending on size), and exceeding it incurs a per-ton overage charge.

For heavy materials like concrete, dirt, or tile, use a 10-yard dumpster — it keeps the weight manageable and within the included allowance. For mixed construction debris (drywall, lumber, fixtures), a 20 or 30-yard works well. Tell us what you're throwing away and we'll help you size correctly.

Scheduling and Swap-Outs

For long projects, plan your dumpster schedule upfront. A typical kitchen remodel needs one 20-yard for the duration. A whole-home renovation may need a 30-yard plus one or two swap-outs. New construction often needs multiple dumpsters scheduled across the project timeline.

Call us to schedule swaps the day before you need them — we'll have a truck ready. For ongoing projects, we can set up a regular swap-out schedule so you always have an empty dumpster on site.
